News from Dutch Club Abel Tasman SECRETARY’S REPORT AGM 2018-2019
Hearty Congratulations to the Dutch Club Abel Tasman for achieving the big milestone of sixty years (1958-2018). There was a big celebration held at the Club on Saturday 27th October, 2018, to which representatives from all the clubs were invited. Regarding the MiCare – Abel Tasman re-development; renovations had been completed at the Murrumbeena Bowls Club. However, in November 2019, the Board of MiCare issued a statement that they would not proceed with the building of 40 apartments and new premises for the club at 60 Rosstown Road, Carnegie. They did so very regretfully as they had hoped it would be a landmark project for them and the design competition would have ensured that it was an attractive addition to the Carnegie landscape. The significant increases in building costs, particularly crane hire and concrete pricing has made the project unviable and the falling housing market means that the sale prices would not be realised. Micare have invested a very significant time and money into the project including VCAT hearings to move it along, but the increases in costs has meant they could not proceed. Therefore, all functions of the Association would be held at the Abel Tasman and the club be run as normally.
The SinterKlaas Committee are to be congratulated on another very enjoyable St. Nicolaas Feest, which is subsidised from the Social Welfare Fund. This year it will be held again at the Abel Tasman Club on Sunday, 1st December. Again hearty thanks to the Christmas Parcels Committee for their caring efforts to cheer all those who are sad, lonely and separated from the Dutch community, bereaved, or recovering from illness. Owing to the fact that the MiCare – Abel Tasman Development project had been terminated, many pressing maintenance items had not been addressed, as the club and DAHC had been due to be demolished. So maintenance and improvements such as roofing, gutters, heating, cooling, kitchen, audio, TV, etc. had been shelved for 6 years. Therefore, the committee of the Abel Tasman had applied for a grant from the Association. A letter was tabled at the February 2019 General meeting of the Association. It was then given to the Finance Committee, who had approved it and it was then voted on by the delegates present, at the March Annual General meeting, where a majority of the financial members present granted the Club the full $50000 it needed to complete the renovations and repairs. The Abel Tasman thanked the delegates of the Association for their generosity, stipulating that the budgeting will be properly managed. On Wednesday afternoon, 17th April, 2019 the new Ambassador from the Netherlands, Mrs. Marion Derckx Visited the Dutch Club Abel Tasman to award Michael Gijsberts the honour of being a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau. The purpose of this visit had been kept secret from Michael, so he was very stunned when family and representatives from the clubs attended. However Michael has given so many hours of voluntary service to so many Dutch organisations, especially the Dutch Heritage Centre, that it is thoroughly well deserved. Congratulations Michael, our newest Knight. On Thursday afternoon 25th April, the Anzac Day Commemoration was held at the Abel Tasman. The Defence Attaché enabled this by sharing the funding costs with the Association, although neither the Honorary Consul or the Defence Attache could attend. There were about 60 in attendance and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the social atmosphere and Tineke van Kooten’s tasty coffie tafel. The Konings Bal was held at the Abel Tasman on Friday, 27th April, 2019. Although numbers were well down, it was an extremely enjoyable night, and, as usual, enthusiastic buying of our raffle tickets Our President, Mrs. Petra van Orsouw was unable to attend and so Mrs. Sonja de Jonge, Vice President, toasted King Willem-Alexander and our Honorary Life Governor, Mr. Ype de Bruin, toasted Queen Elizabeth. Because of the lack of numbers at the Koningsbal, it was decided to hold a Koningsdag celebration on Sunday, 3rd May, 2020, as it has been found that numbers dwindle at evening functions.
Tempo Doeloe invited those veterans involved in the Pacific and Indonesia to attend the victory in the Pacific day on Saturday 18th August at MiCare, Carrum Downs. It was a well attended pleasant afternoon and it we were very glad to welcome the new Assistant Defence Attaché of Australia and New Zealand, Ms. Nadja Pouls. Our veterans enjoyed reminiscing and chatting over lunch, paid for by Tempo Doeloe, but provided by MiCare.
Sadly, we have lost quite a few well known and loved members of our community over the year, including, Mr. Theo de Jong, a member from the very early days of DutchCare ; Mr. Jan Krienen, a long time member of Nieuw Holland and very recently, Mr. Gerry Bakker, long time committee member of Ringwood City Wilhelmina Soccer Club. This year, Mrs. Monica de Knecht is available to be re-elected as Secretary for 3 years and Mr. Hein Heinen is available to be re-elected as Assistant Treasurer for 3 years. As Mr. Michael Gijsberts is standing down at this AGM, Mr. John Krens has made himself available to be the Assistant Secretary.
